🚫 Low Emission Zone (LEZ)
Madrid has two special-protection low-emission zones, Distrito Centro (the old Madrid Central, around Sol, Plaza Mayor and Gran Vía) and Plaza Elíptica, plus the wider city-wide Madrid ZBE. Access depends on the car's DGT environmental label (B, C, ECO or 0 can enter; unlabelled cars cannot), and cameras read number plates. Foreign cars are covered too.
- Plaza Elíptica: cars with a B, C, ECO or 0 label can enter and park without any procedure; cars without a label cannot.
- Distrito Centro: cars with a B or C label may drive in only to park in a public or private car park inside the zone; ECO and 0 cars can enter freely. Cars without a label cannot enter.
- Spanish-plated cars get their label from the DGT (check it on sede.dgt.gob.es). The wider Madrid ZBE and the two special zones are checked by cameras.
Foreign cars: A foreign-plated car has no DGT label, so it must be matched to a Spanish class: send the vehicle's technical data sheet and registration certificate (and proof of ownership) in advance to autoextranjerocentro@madrid.es, or book an appointment at Calle Bustamante 16. Register the plate in the ZBEDEP permit system; the permit is valid for both special zones and for the city-wide Madrid ZBE.
Fine: €200 for entering a special-protection zone without authorisation.

Park & Ride: park outside, metro in
P+R means Park and Ride: a car park on the edge of the city, next to a metro, tram or bus stop. You leave the car there and ride into the centre.
- P+R Avenida de Portugal
- P+R Nuestra Señora del Recuerdo
- P+R Estadio Metropolitano (Aviación Española)
- P+R Ciudad Universitaria (Aparca+T)
Street parking
Street parking is the SER (regulated parking service): paid Monday to Friday 09:00–21:00 and Saturday 09:00–15:00 (in August Monday to Saturday 09:00–15:00; 24 and 31 December 09:00–15:00), and free on Sundays and public holidays. Blue bays: anyone, at most 4 hours, then wait an hour before parking again in the same neighbourhood. Green bays are for residents: other drivers get 2 hours at most. Pay at the meter or in an official app (ElParking, Telpark, ParkingLibre, Parclick, Bip&Drive). The rate depends on the car's label and on air quality; the meter shows it.
Tips
Leave the car outside and take the metro
The centre is compact and the SER, the garages and the low-emission zone make driving in costly and tiring. The EMT P+R car parks at Avenida de Portugal, Nuestra Señora del Recuerdo and the Metropolitano are free if you stay 5–16 hours and use public transport.
Sunday is free on the street
Regulated street parking is not charged on Sundays and public holidays (when we checked, October 2026), and in August it ends at 15:00. Green and blue bays still have local rules and the low-emission zones stay in force, so read the signs.
Use the official apps
The council lists ElParking, Telpark, ParkingLibre, Parclick and Bip&Drive as official SER apps. They also let you end the parking early ('desaparcar') and get refunded for the unused time.
Under a motorhome or coach
We found no official page on motorhome or coach parking in central Madrid; check the garage's height limit (1.85–2.10 m in the EMT garages) and look for the Casa de Campo and city-edge areas on madrid.es before you come.
