Free & cheap parking in Madrid
Parking in the centre of Madrid adds up fast. These are the free and cheap options we found on official sites, with how to get into the centre and the rules to watch.
Checked: 20 October 2026. Prices and hours can change; check the official site before you go.
What is P+R? P+R means Park and Ride: a car park on the edge of the city, next to a metro, tram or bus stop. You leave the car there and ride into the centre.
💡 The cheapest way
The cheapest way to park in Madrid is a deterrent car park at the edge of the city: the EMT lots at Avenida de Portugal, Nuestra Señora del Recuerdo and the Metropolitano, and the Consorcio's Aparca+T lots, are free if you stay 5–16 hours and take public transport. On the street, parking is free on Sundays and public holidays.

When paid street parking is free
The SER is not charged on Sundays and public holidays, after 21:00 on weekdays and after 15:00 on Saturdays; in August the paid day ends at 15:00. This is the schedule on madrid.es when we checked (October 2026): the council can extend the hours or switch the service on for Sundays and holidays in busy zones, so read the sign. Free parking never lifts the low-emission rules. madrid.es/portales/munimadrid/es/Inicio/Movilidad-y-transportes/Servicio-de-Estacionamiento-Regulado-SER-Horario-delimitacion-territorial-y-ambitos-diferenciados-/?vgnextfmt=default&vgnextoid=6f18e4ce78dd6410VgnVCM1000000b205a0aRCRD&vgnextchannel=220e31d3b28fe410VgnVCM1000000b205a0aRCRD ↗

Ways to pay less
Keep the stay under 16 hours
The free deterrent rate needs at least 5 and at most 16 hours and a public transport trip the same day: a Metro or bus single ticket, a 10-trip Multi card or a monthly pass all count. Keep both tickets, you show them at the office when you leave; otherwise the normal rotation rate applies. emtmadrid.es/Bloques-EMT/EMT-Parking/Disuasorios/Condiciones-de-utilizacion?lang=es-ES ↗
Skip the central garages for a full day
In the EMT garages three hours cost about €9.85 and a full day up to €39.35; the deterrent car parks are far cheaper for a day trip. emtmadrid.es/getattachment/Bloques-EMT-Contenido/EMT-Aparcamientos/Publicos/TGen-v2.png.aspx ↗
Near the Royal Palace
The orange-and-blue bays at Paseo del Rey, Parque del Oeste and Cuesta de la Vega charge €0.50 an hour with no time limit, which makes them the cheapest street parking next to the palace and Temple of Debod (a short walk). They are within the SER hours only. madrid.es/portales/munimadrid/es/Inicio/Movilidad-y-transportes/Servicio-de-Estacionamiento-Regulado-SER-Horario-delimitacion-territorial-y-ambitos-diferenciados-/?vgnextfmt=default&vgnextoid=6f18e4ce78dd6410VgnVCM1000000b205a0aRCRD&vgnextchannel=220e31d3b28fe410VgnVCM1000000b205a0aRCRD ↗
Watch out
Low-emission zones: a €200 fine
Entering Distrito Centro or Plaza Elíptica without the right label or authorisation costs €200. A foreign-plated car must be registered with the council first (see the main parking guide). Sunday does not lift the zone rules. madrid.es/portales/munimadrid/es/Inicio/Movilidad-y-transportes/Zonas-de-Bajas-Emisiones/Zona-de-Bajas-Emisiones-de-Especial-Proteccion/Plaza-Eliptica-Zona-de-Bajas-Emisiones-de-Especial-Proteccion/Zona-de-Bajas-Emisiones-de-Especial-Proteccion-ZBEDEP-Plaza-Eliptica-Preguntas-frecuentes/?vgnextfmt=default&vgnextoid=0f0f1e0276fbb710VgnVCM1000001d4a900aRCRD&vgnextchannel=f808acec6f5fe710VgnVCM1000001d4a900aRCRD ↗
Towing
EMT runs the tow-away service: you pay the fee once, in cash or by card, when you collect the car, or online via the EMT 'localiza tu vehículo' page. Park only in marked bays, never in loading zones or on a bay reserved for residents with a notice; EMT publishes the 2026 fee list on its tariff page. emtmadrid.es/Bloques-EMT/EMT-Gruas/Tarifas?lang=es-ES ↗
Green bays are for residents
Visitors can use a green bay for 2 hours at most, then must leave the neighbourhood's green bays for an hour. Blue bays allow 4 hours. High-turnover bays (blue-and-white zigzag) allow 45 minutes, only for cars with an environmental label. madrid.es/portales/munimadrid/es/Inicio/Movilidad-y-transportes/Servicio-de-Estacionamiento-Regulado-SER-Horario-delimitacion-territorial-y-ambitos-diferenciados-/?vgnextfmt=default&vgnextoid=6f18e4ce78dd6410VgnVCM1000000b205a0aRCRD&vgnextchannel=220e31d3b28fe410VgnVCM1000000b205a0aRCRD ↗
