What to expect

Calle de Serrano starts at the Puerta de Alcalá and runs north through the Salamanca district. It was first called Bulevar Narváez and was renamed after the 1868 revolution for General Serrano, who had lived on it. The district takes its name from the Marquess of Salamanca, who was involved in the expansion plan approved in 1860, when the old city walls were torn down.

The street is the main axis of the area known as the Golden Mile, with luxury flagship stores including names such as Loewe, Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Hermès and Prada. Jewellers and more elegant restaurants are nearby, especially along Calle de Jorge Juan. Culture sits on the same street: the National Archaeological Museum is at number 13 beside Plaza de Colón, and the Lázaro Galdiano museum is also on it.
