What to expect

José Lázaro Galdiano was a collector and publisher who died in 1947 and left more than 12,000 items to the Spanish state. The museum opened in 1951 in the palatial house built for him and his wife in 1903, and it kept the interiors, including the painted baroque ceilings he commissioned.

Visiting feels more like walking through a wealthy home than a gallery. Rooms hold paintings, jewellery, small bronzes, silver, ceramics, carved ivories and coins, spanning prehistory to the nineteenth century with strength in the Renaissance. Artists include El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Murillo, Bosch and Cranach. It is a quiet, indoor visit that is rarely crowded.
