What to expect

The Museo del Romanticismo is housed in the former palace of the Marqués de Matallana, built in 1776, on Calle de San Mateo 13 in Chueca. It recreates the daily life and customs of the upper middle class during the Romantic period and shows who its main figures were in Spain. It opened in 1924 as the Museo Romántico, promoted by the Marquis of Vega-Inclán.

The collection includes paintings, furniture and decorative arts from the 19th century, with works by Goya, Esquivel, Madrazo, Alenza and the Bécquer brothers. You also see porcelain from Sargadelos and Sèvres, a collection of porcelain dolls, 15 pianos and the pistol with which the writer Larra took his life. The Magnolia Garden is laid out in the French style, with four paths and a round fountain.
