What to expect

The Zoo Aquarium sits in the Casa de Campo, the large public park west of the centre. It has been at this site since 1972, covers about 20 hectares and is home to several thousand animals from around 500 species. It combines a classic zoo with an aquarium, so you move between open-air enclosures and indoor tanks.

The animals are grouped by continent, from Africa and Asia to the Americas, Europe and Oceania. Giant pandas, koalas, primates and a dolphinarium are the best-known residents, and the programme includes educational displays with sea lions and birds of prey. There is also a petting zoo, a train tour and several restaurants, so it works as a full day out, particularly with children.
