What to expect

This is a recent museum, opened in June 2023, which shows pieces from the Spanish royal collection that are run by Patrimonio Nacional. The building was designed by Emilio Tuñón and Luis Moreno Mansilla and sits above the Campo del Moro gardens, beside the Almudena Cathedral and the Royal Palace. Its granite facade won architecture awards in 2017.

Inside you find paintings, sculpture, tapestries, jewels, instruments and carriages, chosen from a collection of about 155,000 works. Highlights include a portrait of Isabella I by Juan de Flandes, Dürer's Iris, Caravaggio's Salome, Velázquez's White Horse and the Royal Crown Coach. The galleries are modern, spacious and indoors, a good partner to a visit to the Royal Palace.
